About Aquablation

Understanding the procedure

BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or an enlarged prostate) is extremely common in men over 50. Aquablation therapy is a surgical advance that removes obstructing prostate tissue without the trade-offs men often fear from traditional surgery.

What is BPH?

As the prostate grows with age, it can squeeze the urethra and cause urinary symptoms: weak flow, frequent trips to the toilet at night, urgency, or difficulty starting. BPH affects around 50% of men in their 50s and up to 80% of men in their 70s. It does not go away on its own, and medication often provides only partial or temporary relief.

How Aquablation works

A urologist uses ultrasound imaging (not just a camera) to map the entire prostate in real time. They plan exactly which tissue to remove and which to protect. A robotic arm then executes the resection using a precise, heat-free waterjet, removing obstructing tissue with accuracy that does not vary by prostate size. The procedure typically requires only an overnight stay.

Why it's different

Traditional BPH surgery uses heat, which can damage the nerves controlling sexual function and continence. Aquablation's heat-free waterjet avoids this. Clinical studies show superior safety compared with TURP, with lower rates of ejaculatory and erectile dysfunction, and better long-term outcomes in larger prostates. The robotic execution also reduces the variability that comes with manual surgical skill.
